Jakarta, 5 December 2024 – Sebijak Institute, Faculty of Forestry Universitas Gadjah Mada and the Thünen Institute, Germany in collaboration with DIPI/The Indonesian Science Fund has successfully hosted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) titled “How Do Higher Environmental Policy Ambitions in Europe Influence Land Use in Indonesia?”. The event was held at the National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta and brought together various stakeholders ranging from national and regional governments to local and international organizations to discuss the preliminary results as part of the Carbon Leak Project.
The highlight of the FGD was the policy session presented by experts, including Richard Fischer, Heiner von Lüpke, Simon Thomsen, Paola Pozo Inofuentes, and Matthias Dieter from the Thünen Institute, alongside Ahmad Maryudi from the Sebijak Institute. Moderated by Damayanti Buchori and Mila Nuh, the session aimed to gather in-depth, country-specific feedback from Indonesian participants. Through interactive surveys and discussions, the session addressed key topics such as the impacts of the EU Green Deal policies, risks of production displacement, and strategies to improve Indonesia’s policy coherence and sustainability.
The FGD was concluded by Matthias Dieter (Thünen Institute) and Jatna Supriatna (DIPI). Prof. Matthias Dieter highlighted the reflection on the national scale that was done during the day and anticipated the importance of it for the future and broader aspects. Prof. Jatna Supriatna encourages the openness and transparency of policymakers and emphasizes that this study was conducted during the Jokowi era. The FGD provides valuable insights and perspectives into the study which will support further results of the study.
